The present study aims to analyze Nadsat – the fictional language created by Anthony Burgess for his novel “A Clockwork Orange” – according to the Schema Theory. To achieve the initial purpose, an investigation of Nadsat origins is going to be held at first, followed by commentaries on the literary consequences of the use of such innovative argot. Later on, Schema Theory is going to be examined, as well as other pertinent reading strategies. For this matter, the reading of “A Clockwork Orange” is going to be partly considered a case of second language reading, since each reader of it is also a Nadsat L2 reader; yet, it is not safe to consider it an authentic case of L2 reading, because the book’s main structure is still English. Eventually, the theories studied throughout the paper are going to be directly applied to Burgess’ novel, proving that Schema Theory indeed fits into the present analysis.
